As men, we’re taught from an early age that we need to act a certain way to be worthy of love and belonging, and it isn’t an overstatement to say those constraints are killing us. Whatever the nature of your particular stuck-ness, I want to help you get unstuck.

Why Counseling is Different for Guys

In a word: vulnerability. Guys in Kansas City and all over the Midwest are given a certain image of what it means to be a man. Usually, that is a man who doesn’t feel any feelings except the occasional bout of anger. Which is why it’s even more difficult when you feel overwhelmed by apprehension, despair, loneliness, rage, and boredom. But the cardinal sin is to talk to anyone about it. That would be admitting weakness! So by looking into counseling at all, you’re already doing something incredibly brave: you’re breaking out of the “man box” so you can honor your truest, most authentic self.

I start by acknowledging that somewhere, underneath all of the conditioned responses and coping skills you’ve had to adopt to survive, there is a real you just waiting to break free. After that, it’s about using over a decade of clinical experience to give you the tools that you need to become that version of yourself.
